Former Polish president and ‘Solidarity’ founder Lech Wałesa has been given the Eisenhower Medal in Berlin for his contribution to world peace and understanding among nations.

The distinction was granted by ‘People to People’ organization, founded in 1956 by the then US president Dwight Eisenhower. Lech Wałęsa received the medal from the hands of Mary Jean Eisenhower, the founder’s granddaughter.

Wałęsa stressed that the distinction means an lot to him because the assumptions of ‘People to People’ are convergent with those of ‘Solidarity’ movement. He suggested also that in the future he may get more involved in charity.

The Medal has been granted since 1968 to people who have exerted a tangible influence on world peace and international understanding by means of implementing and fostering educational, cultural and charity projects.

Past recipients of the medal include former US presidents Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter and George Bush, as well as such personages as Luciano Pavarotti, Neil Armstrong and Mother Theresa of Calcutta.
